I have decided it would be a fun idea to have a question and answer page pertaining to music, creativity, ability development, piano practice, etc. If you have a question, submit it as a comment and I will respond soon. If you prefer a private comment, send me an email and I will respond in this column, but will not list your name.

Question: What do I do if my child hates piano practice and lessons, but he wants to play another instrument?
Answer: I feel that when a child yearns to play a musical instrument it is a great opportunity to allow him to discover new areas of creativity. Sometimes a child just wants to play computer games, etc. and that is not a wise choice. Music practice of any type is a great experience in learning to take responsibility and develop ability.

Question: Why have recitals? Everyone is so busy.
Answer: A recital gives a student purpose and motivation to practice, builds self-confidence and an ability to accept imperfections in self.
Parents have an opportunity to cheer for their child and encourage them. Some parents who would never think of missing a sports event, a drama event or a musical event where their child performs, do not give the same support for piano. Sad.
Teacher has an opportunity to evaluate his/her teaching skills and improve in skill focus such as dynamics, memorization, rhythm.
